Here’s a Doctor Who sketch I did over the weekend of an Ice Warrior. I enjoy drawing the classic Doctor Who monster so much, especially from the 60’s era of the show. I tried to make this Ice Warrior look powerful and menacing as it emerges from the shadows. I’ve had such a fantastic response to all the sketches I’ve been posting, I can’t thank you all enough. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year, we had family visiting, and it was lovely to spend time with them over the holidays. I hope you enjoy this sketch, and thank you so much for all your encouragement!

Hi Paul and happy new year. Once again you have shown great skill bringing this Ice Warrior to life. Loving the way you blended the shadows and highlights by using the small shadow marks to designate the scales in the light – then reversed the technique so the armour is black with small highlights to define the scales (< I hope that made sense!).
I just had my cable TV box repaired* and found that the BBC Interactive streaming service has a vast boxset history of Dr Who with episodes from William Hartnell's first series all the way through to Sylvester McCoy's tenure, so I am watching all those currently and am about to watch Troughton's encounter with the Ice Warriors so great timing!
*My box failed before COVID and I couldn't get it fixed till now.

Hi and happy new year to you as well! I’m so glad you liked this Ice Warrior sketch, getting that balance of light and shadow was exactly what I was striving to capture. Thank you for such a nice compliment. That’s great to hear your streaming service has the BBC interactive as well , we have the same thing here, and I’ve been watching Classic Who on it as well. Great minds think alike! Great timing you’ve reached The Ice Warriors story, I watched that the other day, I’m on the Underwater Menace atm. 🙂

Yes, I started with William Hartnell and have gotten to Patrick Troughton (just watched “The Faceless Ones” and “Evil of the Daleks”) but sadly most of Troughton’s episodes are either missing or have been reconstructed and animated which kinda lessens the experience. Still fun though and I have Pertwee and T. Baker to look forward to.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the early 60’s episodes. Some are a bit slow paced, but there are some real gems in there – especially the Patrick Troughton episodes. Yes, some of the missing episodes have been animated – with varying degrees of success I have to agree. The 10th Planet Part 4, Moonbase and The Invasion have the best animating IMOP. I’m looking forward to enjoying the Pertwee and Tom Baker years next as well. Classic Who has such a wealth of stories to enjoy. Its fascinating to watch them in order and see how each era of the show has evolved over the years. 🙂

The slow pace for the 60s Doctor Who classics may be a lot to take in now for fans both old and new after how fast paced the modern series has become. But I still like to view some of the 60s episodes on BritBox and certainly for how the alien villains like the Ice Warriors were visually effective then under lesser production values. Thank you, Paul, for your very good sketch.

I really enjoyed the 60’s and 70’s era of Doctor Who as well. Those are some of my favourite stories. We have all of Doctor Who, new and old, on BBC I Player now, and I’ve been binging my way through them all from the beginning. I’ve reached the 3rd Doctor now, been great fun watching them all in order – been ages since I’ve done that. The Ice Warriors are such a great looking Doctor Who monster. Thank you very much for your kind words and glad you enjoyed this Ice Warrior sketch. I always have a lot of fun drawing anything Doctor Who related – especially the monsters! 🙂

Thank you very much. The Ice Warrior is such a distinctive and iconic look, very different from a lot of the other Doctor Who monsters. Had a lot of fun drawing this. Cheers! 🙂

Thank you! That’s what I was aiming for with this sketch. The Ice Warrior is a fantastic looking Doctor Who monster as well. Really enjoyed drawing this one.

Great drawing, I like your continued bold style! What did you think of the modern episodes with the Ice Warriors and their design?
Paul Bowler said:
Thank you very much. Glad you like the bold black and white style. It’s what I always prefer, seems a good fit for how I draw. The Ice Warrior was quite challenging to draw, as it has a lot more surface detail and texture. I like the classic Ice Warrior design best, but I thought the modern take on the Ice Warriors in the episode Cold War was really good as well.

Ahhhh, I love it! You really captured the Ice Warrior here. They are some of my favorite beings on ‘Doctor Who’ and sometimes I wish they’d show up more regularly, like we get with the Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels. But then I think less-is-more really helps fuel their mystique. I thought the same when the Sea Devils returned to menace the Thirteenth Doctor, Yaz, and Dan. So maybe my seeing less of them on the show helps me enjoy them more. Anyway, I’m just rambling on now XD. But I love the sketch and thank you so much for sharing it!
Paul Bowler said:
Hi Michael! Yes, I agree completely. The Ice Warriors are a great Doctor Who monsters, their ongoing popularity is no doubt down to their few appearances in the show. It’s given them a kind of mystique that still makes them seem powerful and mysterious. Ditto with the Sea Devils, it was great how they brought them back for the 13th Doctor’s penultimate swashbuckling episode. Cheers, glad you liked the sketch. I wanted to capture that classic look of the Ice Warriors and keep that mysterious air about them. Always have fun drawing Doctor Who monsters. Thanks for all your support and feedback. 🙂
