Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor #1

Review by Paul Bowler

The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith return for a new adventure in Titan Comics Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor #1 (of 5), and this time the TARDIS has brought them to Victorian London in 1887, but their presence has not gone unnoticed. A sinister woman resides in a mansion of the blind, Scryclops scour the streets at night, and the insatiable hunger of a dark alien power is rising. The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane will have to uncover the mystery of Lady Carstairs house, encountering new friends and enemies along the way, as they face a horror lurking in the heart of Victorian London in this all-new-adventure: Gaze of the Medusa.

From its dark, sinister opening moments in a shadow mansion, where blind servants tend to their black veiled mistress, writers Gordon Rennie & Emma Beeby skilfully build the brooding atmosphere, before we catch up with the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane as they enjoy a show. Gaze of the Medusa: Part 1 is a glorious throwback to the Hinchcliffe / Holmes era of the classic TV series, from the dark foggy streets, to the gothic tone, its an issue that’s sure to induce pang or two of nostalgia for many, the characterization of the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane is also spot on, and you will find yourself completely swept along by the riveting story.

Doctor Who 4th Doctor #1

After the lumbering Scryclops capture Sarah, the Doctor finds some new allies in the form of Professor Odysseus and his daughter Athena. These scenes as the Professor fills the Doctor in on everything that’s been happening are also beautifully written, especially when the conversation turns to the field of chrononautology, and as the Doctor responds you’d swear you could almost hear Tom Baker delivering these lines word for word in your mind.

Brian Williamson’s artwork for this issue perfectly captures the look and tone from this period during the Fourth Doctor’s era, all the familiar tropes are here, dark gothic themes, horses and carriages trundling down foggy streets, weird looking monsters, and a spooky old mansion filled with horror and mystery. The panel layouts are concise enough, there are some bold full pages that cleverly punctuate key moments in the story, Williamson’s has done a superb job capturing the likenesses of the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane – there’s even a nice take on the Doctor’s deerstalker outfit from The Talons of Weng-Chiang – and the vivid colors by HI-FI stylishly enhance the tone of the story and make every detail leap from the page.

As the Doctor, Professor Odysseus, and his daughter Athena set off to rescue Sarah from the creatures lair in a mansion in Chiswick, time might already be running out for Sarah after she meets Lady Emily Carstairs and discovers that something horrible awaits for her in the mansions eerie gallery of treasures… Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor #1 provides an excellent beginning for this new Titan Comics mini-series, with its exciting story by Gordon Rennie & Emma Beeby, great art by Brian Williamson, colors by HI-FI, and a wealth of impressive variant covers to choose from, there is lots to recommend here, especially if, like me, you are a big fan of the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane.

Batman #50 Review

Batman #50

Review by Paul Bowler

The Dark Knight returns to Gotham City in the extra sized Batman #50 for the thrilling conclusion of Snyder and Capullo’s epic Superheavy story-arc! Bruce Wayne has regained his memories and reclaimed the mantel of the Bat to join Jim Gordon in the battle against Mr Bloom and save the city they have sworn to protect.

Batman #50 sees the return of Bruce Wayne to the cape and cowl as Mr Bloom and his super-powered-seed army lays siege to all of Gotham. With the city reeling from Mr Bloom’s onslaught, Batman, Jim Gordon, and Powers Internationals army of GCPD Bat-Bots unite against Gotham’s towering new super villain, and the fate of the city will be decided as Batman’s showdown with Mr Bloom reaches its thrilling conclusion!

Scott Snyder’s and Greg Capullo’s Superheavy arc saw Jim Gordon step up as Gotham’s new Bat-Bot suited Dark Knight following Batman’s apparent demise in Endgame while Bruce Wayne – now without his memories of being Batman – forged a new life with his old flame Julie Madison. Jim became the Batman the city needed at this dark time, but Bruce’s past wouldn’t rest easily, the Joker also survived Endgame, albeit radically changed by the experience, and now Mr Bloom’s rise to power has forced Bruce to sacrifice his newfound life to become the Batman again. Superheavy Part 10 stands as the total culmination of everything Snyder and Capullo have achieved with this story-arc, and it is only now that we can begin to fully appreciate the immense scope and scale of this game-changing storyline as it races towards its city shaking finale!

The beard may be no more, but Bruce Wayne is well and truly back in Batman #50 all kitted out in a new Bat-Suit and ready to give the citizens of Gotham a Batman they’ve never seen before – the Dark Knight they’ve deserved all along. Meanwhile, it’s all going to hell in Gotham as Mr Bloom and his seed-powered minions go on the rampage, while Julia Pennyworth tries to get the injured Jim Gordon to safety, and the Robo-Bat-Suited Commissioner Sawyer leads Gotham’s robo-suited Finest in the fight against Mr Bloom.

Just when it seems that all is lost, the one, true Dark Knight finally returns, rising from the shattered vestiges of Gotham’s most iconic symbol. It’s the rousing moment we’ve all been waiting for since Superheavy began and Snyder delivers it with a series of fan-pleasing moments, revitalized by the Dionesium and with Penny One to welcome him back, its clear Batman is relishing every moment of being back in the cape and cowl. This issue, perhaps more so than any before, exemplifies everything that Snyder and Capullo have done during their tenure on Batman. Sure, Batman #50 is packed with city smashing drama, but as fun and exciting as all the Bat-Bot action is, it is instead the emotionally charged character moments Snyder uses to punctuate the drama at key moments that really strike a chord, especially the moving reunion between Batman and Gordon, we also discover what happened to Duke Thomas’ parents, and there’s a bizarre connection amidst some recently acquired evidence that provides a sinister and unexpected connection to Mr Bloom’s origin.

Batman #50 Cover A

Greg Capullo has well and truly surpassed all our expectations with his artwork on this issue. It looks absolutely stunning! Every page will have you mesmerised by the way Capullo maintains the fluidity and pace of the plot, infusing every scene with a staggering level of detail that almost defies description, to make Batman #50 one of his finest issues ever. From the symbolic moment of Bruce choosing of a new costume, to its eventual reveal, the nail biting tension in the Bat-Blimp high over Gotham, though to Gordon’s resolve to find another way to get the job done, and the bombastic smack down between Batman and Mr Bloom, Capullo pulls out all the stops here, along with Danny Miki’s brilliant inks, and FCO’s glorious colors, to deliver the rousing finale for the conclusion of Snyder’s epic Superheavy storyline. If this issue was a gym session, then suffice to say it’s probably the most extreme work out of Capullo’s artistic talents we’ve ever seen.!

The redesign of the Bat-Suit is both subtle and effective, with some classic embellishments – one in particular being a symbolic fusion of the old and the new in a way that I‘m really pleased to see carry over from Gordon‘s EVA Bat Suit – along with new gloves and cape, but despite all the upgrades and tech its still good to see that some things never change; especially when it comes to Batman getting the boot in during a fight!

In the build up towards its climatic moments, Batman #50 finds all the players in place for the final fight against Mr Bloom. With the Collider kicking off like Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun all over Gotham, Batman and Mr Bloom going toe to toe in scenes that makes Man of Steel look positively tame by comparison, a daring rescue that will grab you by the scruff of the neck and leave you punching the air with glee, and Gordon calling on his Rookie one last time to bring us to possibly the biggest moment of the entire arc as the fate of Gotham City teeters on a superconductive event horizon that burns with hope for a better tomorrow…

Batman #50 also features an eight page coda, written by Scott Snyder, and featuring terrific artwork by Yanick Prouette and colors by Nathan Fairbairn As epilogues go, this little interlude actually proves to be just as powerful and as moving as the main bulk of the story in the issue. The initial focuse is on Jim Gordon, there are some wonderful scenes here, lots of familiar faces, and it seems that there are going to be some pretty major changes at the GCPD as well. Of course it’s when Jim and Batman finally discuss everything that happened since Endgame as they survey the wounded city before them that are really this codas finest moments, and there’s even time for a reconciliation between Duke and Bruce, and some poignant reflection for Julie Madison.

Well… here we are. Yes, as we now know, Batman #50 is indeed Scott Snyder’s and Greg Capullo’s penultimate issue of Batman. Their run on this series has been a tremendous achievement; and its brought us so many incredible stories and iconic moments. Snyder and Capullo have redefined the mythology of the Bat itself, and then some! Having announced their tenure will conclude next issue with Batman #51, Snyder and Capullo have been saying for a while now that they plan to reunite on another project in the near future. In the interim, Batman #52, by James Tvnion IV and Rafael Alberque will bring this current volume to an end before Batman relaunches in June with a new creative team as part of DC’s forthcoming Rebirth event.

I will look to the future with a mixture of sadness, trepidation, and anticipation for the future of this title, along with Rebirth and the changes it brings to DC Comics, and excitement for what Snyder and Capullo will do next. For now though, let’s not dwell on goodbyes, or what the future might hold just yet. Instead, we should celebrate this incredible giant-sized 50th issue of Batman, along with the momentous accomplishments that Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have achieved on this title together with Danny Miki and FCO Plascencia. What a team! Batman #50 is a full-on epic issue in every sense of the word, the story and art will blow you away, and you will be left with an overwhelming sense that you have just read one of the greatest Batman issues ever made.

International Iron Man #1 Review

International Iron Man #1

Review by Paul Bowler

So, who is Tony Stark? Marvel’s brand new International Iron Man series from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleeve is setting out to discover just that! Ever since Tony found out he was adopted as a baby, it has cast a dark shadow over his life, now Tony Stark is about to embark on a journey to discover the truth. International Iron Man #1 marks the beginning of a new direction in Tony’s life, with a glimpse into events from Tony’s past while Iron Man will uncover new facts about the Marvel Universe in the present!

Take the premise of Tony Stark’s wish to uncover what his legacy really is, splice it with a character deconstruction by Bendis and Maleeve along similar lines as their award winning and critically acclaimed run on Daredevil, and the you have the start of a bold new era for Tony Stark in International Iron Man.

From the scene setting aftermath of a battle in Bulgaria in the here and now, Invincible Iron Man #1 makes it clear from the outset what an exciting book this new Marvel title is going to be. Brian Michael Bendis immediately sets the tone and pace of this new series as events flashback to Tony Stark’s time at Cambridge University twenty years ago, during a particularly rowdy celebration after a soccer match. Tony’s bewilderment and indifference to everything going on around him is pitched perfectly by Bendis, and the reason why Tony is here quickly becomes clear as a beautiful lady catches his eye across a crowded bar…

International Iron Man #1

Those expecting all-out Iron Man action in this issue might be left feeling a little disappointed, however, stick with it and what you have here soon becomes a fascinating character study of Tony Stark during his formative years. Bendis is on fine form once again here, he has such a great handle on Tony Stark’s character. Its ingenious how the clever script offers us this glimpse into the events that shaped his early life, from the boisterous celebrations he finds himself caught up in, the wry humour, his strained relationship with his father, and Tony’s courting of Cassandra Gillespie – despite the best efforts of the bodyguards employed by her mother to keep a close eye on her daughters whereabouts – is electrifying and worthy of every moment that Bendis spends on driving the narrative with Tony’s and Cassandra’s sparkling, and often poignant, dialogue.

Alex Maleeve’s artwork for International Iron Man is utterly superb, every nuance of Bendis’ story is brought to live in vivid clarity, all of the emotional and humorous beats are spot on, and you will become so totally immersed in the plot that you’ll almost find yourself forgetting about the teasing opening scene as key events unfold in the past. Maleeve lavishes a stupendous level of detail on every panel, all the characters and expressions are well defined: from the punch up in the bar, to evading the bodyguards, it is the scene between Tony and Cassandra as they have lunch after a particularly dull lecture on advanced economics that really strikes a chord and illustrates the great level of characterization that’s sure to make this series stand out from the crowd. Paul Mounts colors are another crucial element in making this issue look so impressive, with pale hues and dusky tones all combining to accentuate every aspect of Alex Maleevel’s art – and I will certainly look forward to seeing more of their take on the Iron Man armor in future issues.

The issue builds to a nerve jangling climax as Tony goes for lunch with Cassandra and her parents, and what follows during the action packed closing moments as past and present collide is sure to keep you counting down the days until the next issue. International Iron Man #1 gets this series off to a cracking start, with its great story by Brian Michael Bendis, together with the stunning artwork by Alex Maleeve and colors by Paul Mounts, it ensures that International Iron Man #1 will be an issue that will have you going back to read again many times over just to saviour the beautiful synergy of art and storytelling it so skilfully achieves.

The Amazing Spider-Man #9

Review by Paul Bowler

Scorpio Rising begins in The Amazing Spider-Man #9, as the wall crawlers new mission send him on a journey across Europe for a finale showdown with the international terrorist organization: The Zodiac! Their leader, Scorpio, is ready to instigate his master plan. Spider-Man and his allies must race against time to hunt Scorpio down, because if he succeeds, even Spider-Man and S.H.I.E.L.D won’t be able to stop him…

The Amazing Spider-Man #9 gets the first chapter of Scorpio Rising of to an exciting start. If you thought Spidey’s battle with Mr Negative, Cloak & Dagger, and his own Spider-Mobile in The Dark Kingdom was tough, then you better hang onto your webs because that was just a taster for what’s to come next! Writer Dan Slott and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli continue to work their magic with Marvel’s all-new, all-different The Amazing Spider-Man, as this action-packed new story-arc begins, and this time they are really going to put Peter Parker through his paces as he confronts the remnants of Zodiac!

Amazing Spiderman #9 Cover A

Dan Slott rockets our global friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’s adventures into the stratosphere, and beyond, in Scorpio Rising Part 1: One Way Trip, as Nick Fury turns to Peter Parker and Spider-Man to track down Scorpio before he can utilize the power of the Orrery – a mysterious mystical artefact Scorpio managed to escape with during the Zodiac’s attack on the British Museum in London. Now after Scorpio hacked S.H.I.E.L.D’s satellites, Nick Fury seeks assistance from Peter Parker at his New York HQ in the Baxter Building, but the “boss” of Parker Industries is unavailable, fortunately Spider-Man has devised a plan to reset the satellites manually – once Fury’s cleared them some airspace that is!

Yes, there’s a Spiiddeerr-Maaan waiting in the sky (Sorry I couldn’t resists that!) as Spidey and Nick Fury blast off into orbit to take back control of the S.H.I.E.L.D satellites. It’s a move that not even Scorpio or the looped timey-wimey abilities of Gemini could’ve predicted, as they monitor events from Scorpio’s base in Paris. Dan Slott strikes a perfect balance between all the drama and humour in this issue, with digital logos, emojis, a hilariously staged Gravity scenario for Nick Fury, and quite possibly the best built-in play list ever which all collectively make for a sublime blend of action and fun!

Following Matteo Buffangi’s excellent stint as guest artist for ASM #6-8, Giuseppe Camuncoli’s is back to provide the art for The Amazing Spider-Man #9, together with inks by Cam Smith, and this issue is a veritable feast of striking visuals, as Camuncoli brings us some of this new Marvel series’ most exciting scenes to date. The sheer level of detail lavished on each page by Camuncoli and Smith is staggering, from the initial scenes in the lobby of the Baxter Building, to excitement of the Arachno-Rockets launch, Scorpio’s menacing lair in Paris, and the beautifully realized action in space are all sublimely accentuated by colorist Marte Gracia’s exquisite tones and hues.

Everything in this issue builds towards the spectacular reveal of thirteenth a sing of the Zodiac, together with a nail-biting freefall from orbit, a brief interlude at Parker Industries London HQ with romantic and menacing ramifications, and a thrilling cliff-hanger ending. This issue certainly puts our wall crawling hero through the wringer! Featuring a gorgeous cover by Alex Ross, The Amazing Spider-Man #9, with its exciting story by Dan Slott and great art by Giuseppe Camuncoli, remains one of Marvel’s best new titles, and this Scorpio Rising story-arc looks set to be an action-packed thrill-ride of epic proportions for the Spiderverse!

Star Trek #54

Review by Paul Bowler

Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise continue their ongoing mission to explore the final frontier in IDW Publishing’s Star Trek #54, in Reunion Part 2, from writer Mike Johnson, with artwork and cover by Tony Shasteen, and colors by Davide Mastrolonardo. With intergalactic peace threatened the crew of the Enterprise must face a breakaway Orion faction, rescue their captive crewmembers, and confront treachery from within!

Following a rendezvous in space last issue between the Federation starships Enterprise and Tereshkova, that reunited Lieutenant Gaila with her brother, Kai, the ramifications of the events that caused them flee the Orion homeworld fourteen years ago with their father now threaten galactic peace. Uhura was delighted to see her friend Gaila again, but when the Enterprise and Tereshkoya respond to a distress call from the Ullushu system, the ships were ambushed by a renegade Orion faction. Gaila and Kai were transported onboard one of the Orion vessels, where they were taken to meet the instigator behind the attack, their own mother!

Star Trek #54 Cover

Mike Johnson skilfully brings the plot threads together for the conclusion of this new two-part story. Having originally escaped from the Orion homeworld in order to prevent Gaila being forced into an arranged marriage by her mother Vila to secure her families status and power, Gaila and Kai went on to become the first Orion siblings to join Starfleet. Now in Star Trek #54 they are prisoners of the rogue Orion faction, and this time their mother is determined to see that Kai’s marriage takes place – even at the cost of peace! Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise must deal with the situation and rescue Gaila and Kai, but in order to do so they will have to risk breaching the treaty between the Orion Syndicate and the Federation.

However, the Orion ships weaponry has somehow affected the Enterprise and the Tereshkova’s warp cores, weakening the antimatter containment fields, making pursuit of the unsanctioned Orion faction impossible until Scotty can makes repairs, and even then the Enterprise must venture into Orion territory alone. It also transpires that Vila has human spies deep inside Starfleet itself! With the clock ticking, time is running out for Gaila and Kai back on the Orion homeworld, with their mother busy organizing Gaila’s wedding to the insect-like Pacari, Seven-Tellek, while her brother Kai battles for his life in a gladiatorial arena.

The art by Tony Shasteen is superbly detailed and captures all of the characters likenesses perfectly. Each scene flows seamlessly into the next; the exciting page layouts build the momentum throughout, and the bold hues and tones of colorist Davide Mastrolonardo ensures Star Trek #54 looks amazing. There are numerous key moments in this issue: from the dramatic scenes of the starships in deep space, there are some highly impressive vistas featuring the Air-Chipelago on the Orion homeworld, the stark reality of the gladiatorial arena leaves absolutely no room for modesty, Kai and Gaila make a daring escape from their mothers clutches, and there’s stunning reveal for the Enterprise that will take your breath away!

Although it does feel like everything has been resolved a little too quickly, Reunion Part 2 is still a thoroughly enjoyable story, and the finale scenes with Uhrua, Gaila, Kia, and Kirk brings the issue to a nice close. Star Trek #54 is another great issue, writer Mike Johnson’s exciting script balances the action with some fine character moments, and Tony Shasteen’s impressive artwork brings this fast-paced story to life in fine style. This IDW series is a must for Star Trek fans, with its energizing story and art, it continues to expand on the concepts and premise of the Enterprise’s ongoing mission, and ramps the excitement up to warp speed with every issue!
