First trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune movie!
Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”) directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name. A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel will split the book into two movies. Check out the first trailer for the new Dune movie, which features a number of iconic scenes from Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, including Paul’s prophetic dream, as well as the Reverend Mother testing Paul before he departs for Arrakis, and the trailer ends with a glimpse of one of Dune‘s iconic Sandworms! I think Villeneuve is a great director, Frank Herbert’s Dune has always been one of my favourite Sci-Fi novels as well, so really excited about this new movie version!
Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script he also co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Legendary Pictures’ Dune stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yueh, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Liet Kynes, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, Dave Bautista Glossu Rabban, David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Stephen Henderson as Thufir Hawat, and Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck. The film is slated to be released in theaters on December 18, 2020.

It looks better than Lynch’s movie, although this doesn’t say much…
I agree, Lynch’s movie wasn’t exactly great. Denis Villeneuve is an excellent director, this new Dune film appears to be quite a faithful adaptation of the book as well, so got high hopes for this movie.
Why is Liet being played by a woman? This type of “change” is why I’m really worried about this movie, no matter how awesome trailers may look.
Ok, here’s a couple of paragraphs from CBR.com
While in Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel the character is male, Dr. Liet Kynes will be played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster in director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune movie. During the debut event for the Dune trailer, Duncan-Brewster addressed the character being gender swapped for the film.
Asked by host Stephen Colbert about any conversations she had with Villeneuve about the choice, Duncan-Brewster replied, “I think and foremost, as far as Denis was concerned, it was all about concentrating on the essence of this person. He’s an integral role. He connects all the dots. He connects the Harkonnens. He connects the House of Atreides. He connects the Fremen, planet Arrakis, sandworms. This is somebody who understands all these worlds and moves in between each and every one. So I don’t think it matters that Kynes, in the book, is a man. What’s important is what Kynes stands for.”
This is exactly the kind of bullshit I’d expect from hollywood. Consider me not optimistic at all anymore 😦
I was a bit surprised the character Leit has been gender swapped for the movie. The character is male in the novel and does indeed playa key role in the narrative of the story and how events pan out. However, if this is just the usual Hollywood bullshit change for changes sake or a sign of the industries attempt to be more diverse and inclusive, remains to be seen. I’ve been very impressed by Denis Villeneuve’s films so far, so I’m still hopeful Villeneuve’s new Dune movie will live up to expectations – despite the digressions from Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel or the hype generated by the trailer. Dune has always been a tough nut to crack, either as a movie or a mini-series, but I think if anyone can do it justice then Villeneuve can.
I applaud your positivism, no matter how I might disagree with it 😀
I am so looking forward to this film and we certainly need a huge blockbuster after the disappoining Tenet. I hope the film is not delayed to next year as the current rumors have it due to the shuffling of film releases. But as long as the film comes out in any form at any time, I will be a happy viewer!
I’m really exited about Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune movie as well, and thought the trailer looked really good. I’ve not seen Tenet but I’ve heard people have had mixed feelings about it. I hope the new Dune movie doesn’t get delayed because of the pandemic rising again, but so long as it comes out in some form I will be pleased to see it. 🙂
Never saw the older movie, nor have I read the book. I know several people who have both read and watched them, and they all hated the movie.
Being someone with very little knowledge of Dune, this trailer looks intriguing.
You’ve heard right, Frank Herbert’s book is really good, but the film by David Lynch isn’t nothing to write home about – mind you some SFX were quite good for its time, especially the sequences with the sandworts. I think Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune movie has every chance of being a more faithful adaptation and I’m looking forward to seeing it.
This looks amazing, really. I’m not familiar with the story, but we have just ordered the book online, so it’ll be interesting to compare the book to this new film.
Frank Herbert’s Dune is one of my favourite Sci-Fi books, its a great story. Was very impressed with this trailer for David Villeneuve’s new Dune film, and I’ve high hopes that it will be quite a faithful adaptation of the novel.
Honestly …. just can’t wait for this film!!!
Me too, I’m a big fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune, so really looking forward to this movie as well.
