Avengers Endgame
Review by Paul Bowler.
Avengers Endgame explodes onto the big screen in the wake of Avengers Infinity War’s devastating cliff-hanger from last year which saw fifty per cent of the MUC’s heroes turned to dust by cosmic super-villain Josh Brolin’s Thanos.. This spectacular, 22nd instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeelyand, brings the saga to a shattering conclusion – and yes Avengers Endgame is every bit the triumphantly bombastic finale we could’ve ever hoped for!
The surviving Avengers are back, with the classic trinity of Robert Downey Jnr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth returning as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, along with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner / Hulk and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and a wealth of other surviving MCU heroes including Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes / War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man to name just a few of the films star-studded ensemble cast uniting to avenge their fallen comrades by striking back to defeat the all-powerful Thanos and save the universe.
This time though the Avengers will have Brie Larson’s cosmic powered Captain Marvel fighting alongside them! Captain Marvel certainly brings a fresh new dynamic to the team. Captain Marvel’s presence somewhat redresses the slight gender imbalance in the Avengers team line-up, she’s a major powerhouse in her own right, and has a mischievous no-nonsense attitude and slight disdain for following orders.
Josh Brolin remains as compelling and powerful in the role of Thanos. The Mad Titan is confident to the extreme, sure in his power, and as ruthlessly intelligent as ever. As villains go in the MCU, Thanos is one of the most well written and developed so far, and Avengers Endgame delivers a spectacular showdown between the Avengers and their intergalactic arch-enemy.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have weaved their spellbinding magic again with Avengers Endgame. If you thought Infinity War was epic in scope and scale, well you better buckle up, because you ain’t seen nothing yet! Avengers Endgame is packed with awesome action-set-pieces, jaw-dropping CGI, and plenty of glorious character moments for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they dust themselves off and take the fight to Thanos.
With its three hour run time of thrills, action, and shock surprises, Avengers Endgame will have you on the edge of your seat as the plot twists and turns through a myriad of plot threads that skilfully encompasses the entirety of the MCU amidst all the spectacle.
To say more could end up risking spoiling this incredible cinematic event. So, suffice to say Avengers Endgame provides an emotionally charged finale to the current MCU film series, its also brilliant fun, and one of the most epically action-packed superhero movies ever!
I won’t have time to watch this movie until next weekend- I can’t wait!
Its an awesome movie, really enjoyed it, have fun! 🙂
Hope to see it this week. Everyone I’ve spoken to agrees it’s awesome!
I was totally blown away by Avengers Endgame, it was brilliant. Great atmosphere in the cinema as well with everyone laughing at the jokes and cheering along with all the epic action. Enjoy! 🙂
Where does Marvel go from here? How do they top it?
Honestly I’ve no idea. Endgame is an epic film in scope and scale. It will have to be something spectacular indeed! Will be exciting to see where the MCU goes next from here 🙂
Absolutely loved it!!! It was so satisfying 😀
Me too! Avengers Endgame was so exciting 🙂
Thor aside I definitely enjoyed this one. It’s not one of my favorite Marvel films, but it was a nice way to wrap up the first era of the MCU
It was a fun and exciting movie for sure. Those 3 hours flew by so quickly as well. I think some characters were served better by the script than others, but overall I found it a great finale to this part of the MCU. Will be exciting to see where everything goes from here 🙂
Hi Paul, I’d love to go and see this film. just one problem I need to watch about half of the remaining 21 films first! It’s expensive trying to keep up with these movies 😀 And thanks for not spoiling anything for me in this one.
Hiya! Yes, there’s a lot of Marvel films, so I won’t lie, knowing some of their stories is probably needed to best enjoy everything in Avengers Endgame. But, I’d say you could still see it and probably enjoy most of it, especially the final act! You’re welcome, I tried my best to make this review totally spoiler free, as I know not everyone has seen it yet. Cheers for commenting 🙂
Just love this film. It’s too early to rank the 22nd MCU film with the others but it’s up there!
Endgame did what it had to do and does this in a flourish. It’s also a wonderful love letter to fans of the MCU and Marvel with all the references and inside jokes. I could tell Endgame will hold up well with multiple viewings. Thanks for the review.
I thought Endgame was brilliant as well. Really enjoyed it, and its certainly up there with my favourite MCU movie too. The emotional beats, the action, and all the fun references made Endgame feel extra special. I can’t wait to see the film again. Cheers, glad you enjoyed the review 🙂
I managed to see it a lot earlier than expected, and Endgame is everything I hoped it would be. Lots of surprises, lots of reveals, some very emotional moments, and a very satisfying climax. I want to see it a second time before I write my Endgame blog post, but it feels like it deserved its $1.2 billion opening weekend worldwide. Those kinds of numbers are insane.
Awesome, glad you got around to seeing Avengers Endgame. Know you’ve been so busy with the move ect. Yeah, it was such an action packed, emotional, and epic movie on every level. It sure brings this era of the MCU to a spectacular close. Endgame has been phenomenally successful as well. Its a film I think I’d certainly like to go and see again if I get the chance. 🙂
I’m glad you had a great time, Paul. Due to go in the next few days. I hope I like it as much as you.
Avengers Endgame was such a fun and exciting film. Such a nice atmosphere in the cinema as well, with everyone enjoying the jokes and cheering along with all the action. A big event movie. Have a great time when you see it Cindy 🙂
Students in my high school say it’s the Star Wars 4 of their generation. Interesting.
You know, I think they have that exactly right. Couldn’t have put it better myself. Its certainly been a record breaking film at the box office. Its a film that everyone can enjoy as well, you don’t need to know lots about comics to be part of the fun, and the spectacular action is breathtaking. I’m hoping to see it again this weekend 🙂
A great film, one I could easily watch multiple times over.
I really enjoyed Avengers Endgame as well. Agree, its a film to see many times over. Hoping to see it again soon too 🙂
I was surprised to read this film was so long, but I haven’t yet come across anyone who says it’s too long. It sounds like audiences are really getting their money’s worth.
Avengers Endgame is a long film. Must admit, those 3 hours flew by when I saw it, it didn’t feel like a 3 hour film at all. 🙂
Wow. Just saw it. Enjoyed every moment of it! All the pieces fit together just right, and I loved how nearly all of the characters were handled, even Thor, though his change in five years seemed a bit much. Loved how Nebula developed and was used. Loved the surprise appearances by many characters from the MCU. Captain America and Tony Stark were brilliant.
That’s great, glad you enjoyed it. I thought Avengers Endgame was brilliant, and I liked how all the cast got a moment in the spotlight as well. It was great to see Nebula play a bigger role in the story too, and it was fun to see all those surprise appearances from everyone else also. Endgame was a great fun event movie, saw it again at the weekend, gets even better on viewing again 🙂
I’ll probably go see it again, too!
Avengers Endgame was even better on the 2nd viewing, there’s so much going on in this movie when you first see it. Not often I go see a film twice either, but I’d certainly recommend it for Endgame 🙂
I saw it again yesterday and liked it even more!
Awesome! I really enjoyed watching Avengers Endgame again as well, such a spectacular movie and great fun 🙂
A perfectly concise review; sells the film brilliantly and would have me excited if I was thinking about seeing it. I have seen the film and loved it with similar enthusiasm (though it didn’t get the full five stars on my Letterboxd).
Thank glad you enjoyed the review. I don’t give star ratings on review, not on my blog anyway. It was a good film and I enjoyed it as well 🙂
I avoid star ratings on my blog, too, since the can’t reflect the suffering ways people might engage with a film, but it seems appropriate to include them on Letterboxd since a large aspect of that is comparing perspectives. Glad you enjoyed the film anyway and thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
Great Review, Paul
For me, this marked a fitting, epic end to 40 years of cinema-going.
Shouldn’t it have appeared on DVD by now…?! Itching to get my own copy
Altho ill-health has vastly reduced my blogging recently, I still try to get some pieces finished:

Cheers!
Hi Brad, glad you enjoyed the review. I agree, thought Avengers Endgame was an exciting way to round off this chapter of the MCU. I think the DVD / Blu Ray is out beginning of September so not long to wait now. Sorry to hear you haven’t been well. I had to take a break from blogging last year when I was sick in hospital for a bit, but getting back to things now. Hope you feel better soon as well 🙂
